Hanif Rastgoftar joined the Centre in 2011 to pursue his PhD studies and interdisciplinary research in conjunction with energy generation, technology management, sustainability and smart grid. 

Hanif got his Master's in Energy Systems Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 2007, whilst he had a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, both with Honours. During his undergraduate studies, he was awarded a national honour for his academic achievements by Iran's President at that time, M. Khatami, and Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. Prior to joining the Engineering Department at the University of Cambridge as a PhD student, Hanif had some years of work experience in the energy and electricity sector. He is interested in areas of research such as energy efficiency, electricity - energy policy, energy economy, smart grid, renewable energy, distributed generation, sustainable development, technology management, climate change mitigation, systems engineering and control engineering.
