A report based on Lissie Liddle's PhD study which reviews handpump-borehole implementation in Uganda has recently been published as an Open Report  by the British Geological Survey. See: British Geological Survey  Open Report  OR/18/ 02 available  at http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/520591/1/OR18002.pdf

The work is linked to the Hidden Crisis project within the UPGro research programme – co-funded by NERC, DFID, and ESRC with the Cambridge elements of the work led by Professor Dick Fenner.

The research  seeks to understand the siting and drilling/installation (D/I)  process in Uganda and aims to identify any factors within this process that may be adversely affecting the quality of the siting and D/I work. Eighty semi-structured interviews were conducted in Uganda in 2017 with district water offices and district procurement offices (across twenty districts), civil society organisations, drilling contractors, groundwater consultants, the Ministry of Water and Environment, and the Ugandan Drilling Contractors Association.  The results highlight a number of key concerns that can directly impact on the subsequent functionality of the HPB installations.
